The Angels picked up a pair in the sixth before Baylor and Rudi homered off Rich Gossage in the eighth.

Reggie Jackson batted in a run with a single in the ninth to put the Yankees ahead, 7-4, but with two out in the Angels' half, Carney Lansford and Dan Ford hit singles and Baylor followed with a homer to tie the score. Ron Davis, who had an 8-0 record in relief for the Yankees, suffered his first defeat in the 12th when Brian Downing doubled, Joe Rudi sacrificed and Merv Rettenmund singled over a drawn-in outfield.
