Phil Garner hit a single and homer, driving in three runs, and Ed Ott accounted for two with a double as the Pirates defeated the Astros, 9-3. The victory was the Pirates' fifth in a row and ninth in their last 10 games, while the Astros lost their fourth straight and 11th in the last 12.

With the help of Ott's double, the Pirates jumped off to a three-run lead in the first inning. Art Howe homered for the Astros in the third, but Garner batted in two runs with his single in the Pirates' half. Garner then homered in the sixth when the Pirates iced the decision with three runs.
