Don Hood and Jim Kaat combined on a three-hitter as the Yankees blanked the Mariners, 4-0. After Hood left game in the fifth inning because of cramps in his left shoulder, Kaat took over and hurled hitless ball the rest of the way.

The Yanks scored in the second inning when Reggie Jackson was hit by a pitch, went to third on a single by Roy White and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Chambliss. They added a pair of runs in the third on an RBI single by Thurman Munson and sacrifice fly by White, and posted their final marker in the fifth when Bobby Murcer drew a leadoff walk and came home on a double by Munson.
