Heroics by Dave Winfield lifted the Padres to a 6-5 triumph over the Phillies. With the Padres trailing, 5-3, in the eighth inning, Winfield clouted a two-run homer to tie the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, Winfield delivered the game-winning single after Gene Richards legged out an infield hit and reached second on a throwing error by Phil shortstop Bud Harrelson. Ozzie Smith then received an intentional walk. After Gene Tenace popped out, Winfield delivered the decisive blow. [The Sporting News]
