In a game marked by a prolonged argument, the Reds edged the Pirates, 6-5. The Reds scored four runs in the first inning on six singles and added their other pair on a homer by Ken Griffey in the seventh. The argument developed in the fourth inning after Bill Madlock hit a two-run homer for the Pirates. With Phil Garner at third and Lee Lacy at first, Lacy broke for second on a pitch to Omar Moreno and was tagged out, according to umpire Dick Stello. However, plate ump Dave Pallone called ball four, entitling Lacy to second base.

Lacy, unaware of the call at the plate, started to return to the dugout and he was tagged out by Red shortstop Dave Concepcion. An argument developed over whether Lacy was out or safe and it appeared for a while that the umps would allow him to return to his base. After a 34-minute argument on both sides, the umps eventually ruled Moreno had walked and Lacy was safe at second rather than caught stealing. But they also ruled he was out when subsequently tagged by Concepcion, triggering a Pirate protest. [The Sporting News]
