The Angels downed the Yankees, 9-5, but ace pitcher Nolan Ryan was forced to leave the game in the second inning when he felt something pop in his right elbow. Ryan was flown back to California for X-rays.

The Angels scored three times in the second inning. A double by Joe Rudi and a pair of walks loaded the bases. One run scored when catcher Jerry Narron's return throw eluded pitcher Tommy John. The second tally came across on a single by Rod Carew and the third registered when Narron threw wildly as Carew stole second. The Angels wrapped up the game in the eighth with a two-run single by Rudi, sacrifice fly by Bobby Grich and RBI groundout by Jim Anderson. [The Sporting News]
