Chet Lemon scored the tie-breaking run after escaping a rundown in the bottom of the eighth inning as the White Sox scored a 6-2 victory over the Royals. Lemon led off with a double and reached third when Royal left fielder Willie Wilson misplayed the ball.

After Jorge Orta walked, Lamar Johnson hit a dribbler in front of the plate. Relief pitcher Dan Quisenberry fielded the ball and trapped Lemon in a rundown. Lemon headed for the plate and avoided the tag to score. Quisenberry was charged with an error. Subsequently in the same frame, Bill Nahorodny broke the game open with a three-run double.
