Homers by Scot Thompson and Steve Ontiveros hightlighted the Cubs' 9-2 pounding of the Mets. The Cubs scored twice in the fourth inning on a leadoff round-tripper by Thompson, triple by Bill Buckner and sacrifice fly by Larry Biittner.

Thompson drove home a fifth-inning tally with a sacrifice fly. The Cubs iced the game with a five-run outburst in the seventh stanza, two markers coming across on a single by Ivan DeJesus and the final three on a circuit clout by Ontiveros. [The Sporting News]
