Combining on a six hitter, Ed Whitson and Gary Lavelle pitched the Giants to a 6-2 decision over the Padres. The Giants took the lead in the first inning when Bill North singled, stole second, went to third on an error and came home on a sacrifice fly by Willie McCovey. After Jack Clark made it 3-0 in the fifth with a two-run single, the Giants put the game away in the ninth with an RBI pinch-single by Mike Ivie, an error, and a sacrifice fly by McCovey.
