Going the distance for the seventh time this year, Pete Vuckovich pitched the Cardinals to a 6-5 victory to sweep the three-game series and hand the Phillies their sixth straight defeat. The Cards, after taking a 2-1 lead, stowed away the decision with four runs in the fifth inning.

Vuckovich launched the stanza with a single, Garry Templeton doubled and Jerry Mumphrey drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. A single by Keith Hernandez added a tally. Ted Simmons was hit by a pitch and was forced by George Hendrick. Tony Scott delivered a double to drive in Hernandez and when Greg Luzinski misplayed the ball in left field, Hendrick came home with the eventual decisive run. Mike Schmidt singled in the Phillies' first run in the fourth and clouted his 36th homer after a double by Pete Rose in the sixth. Luzinski also homered. [The Sporting News]
