Ending their six-game losing streak, the Phillies edged the Cubs, 5-4, in 10 innings. The winning rally began when Mike Schmidt opened the Phillie 10th with a single, stole second as Mike Anderson struck out and reached third on a wild pitch.

After Bob Boone and Garry Maddox were intentionally walked to load the bases, Manny Trillo stroked a single to left to plate Schmidt with the winning run. The Cubs had trailed, 4-0, in the eighth but tied the contest on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Ken Henderson, two-run triple by Ivan DeJesus and run-scoring single by Bill Buckner.
