The Phillies won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 7-4, but were stopped by the Mets in the nightcap, 2-1. The Phils exploded for four runs in the first inning of the lidlifter. Bake McBride cracked a leadoff double and two outs later scored on a single by Greg Luzinski. After Bob Boone singled, Garry Maddox lined a two-run double and scored on a single by Manny Trillo. Luzinski slammed a two-run homer in the fifth.

In the second game, Pete Falcone and Neil Allen combined on a five-hitter for Mets, who snapped a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning. Doug Flynn lined a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Falcone. Rawly Eastwick replaced starter Kevin Saucier on the mound for the Phils and retired Gil Flores but then yielded a single by Frank Taveras that chased Flynn across the plate with the winning tally. Mike Schmidt had given the Phils a 1-0 lead in the fourth with his 37th homer of the season, but the Mets tied it in the fifth when Taveras walked, stole second and scored on a single by Lee Mazzilli.
