J.R. Richard struck out 15 to equal his career high while pitching the Astros to a 4-1 victory over the Braves. The Astros scored twice in the second inning on a single by Enos Cabell, a stolen base, a double by Art Howe and single by Alan Ashby.

Their two other runs followed in the fourth when Terry Puhl doubled with the bases loaded. Richard pitched a six-hitter and yielded the Braves' lone run in the third when Jerry Royster and Garry Matthews walked and Bob Horner singled. [The Sporting News]
