The Orioles erupted for five runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Yankees, 5-4, for their sixth straight victory and 15th in last the 17 games. Lou Piniella batted in two runs with a double and single as the Yankees took a 4-0 lead.

The Orioles' rally in the eighth began with a single by Kiko Garcia, double by Rick Dempsey and two-run double by Al Bumbry. Ken Singleton singled to drive in Bumbry. After taking third on a single by Terry Crowley, Singleton counted the tying run on a sacrifice fly by John Lowenstein, knocking out Jim Kaat. Rich Gossage relieved and was tagged for singles by Lee May and Billy Smith, producing the Orioles' winning run. [The Sporting News]
