Completing a five-game series sweep and taking over first place in the East division, the Pirates beat the Phillies twice, 12-8 and 5-2. In the opener, Greg Luzinski hit a grand slam and the Phillies led at one point, 8-3, but the Pirates kept chipping away and eventually tied the contest at 8-8 in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Tim Foli. Then, in the bottom of the ninth, the Pirates loaded the bases with two out and John Milner connected for a pinch-grand slam off the first pitch from reliever Tug McGraw.

A four-run rally in the fourth inning was decisive in the nightcap. Omar Moreno drove in two runs with a double and Phil Garner two more with a single. Enrique Romo pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to boost his season's record to 8-3. Kent Tekulve finished in the ninth for his 20th save. [The Sporting News]
