. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The Indians scalped the Red Sox twice, 6-4 and 8-2, in a separate admission, day-night doubleheader before a total paid crowd of 61,899. Toby Harrah and Bobby Bonds each collected three hits for the Indians in the first game. Jim Rice hit a homer to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning, but the Indians tallied three times in the sixth, one run scoring on a double by Harrah and two on a single by Duane Kuiper. Bonds then provided the Indians with their winning margin, knocking in a run with a triple in the seventh and scoring himself on a wild pitch.

In the night game, Dan Spillner, normally used in relief, pitched the Indians to victory with his first complete game since 1975. Tom Veryzer and Mike Hargrove each hit a two-run single. The Red Sox deprived Spillner of a shutout when Rick Burleson doubled and Fred Lynn homered in the ninth inning. [The Sporting News]
