With Tom Seaver posting his ninth straight victory, the Reds won the opener of a doubleheader, 9-2, before losing the nightcap to the Padres, 5-4. The Reds broke the first game open with four runs in the third inning. A double by Johnny Bench plated two tallies, a double by Ray Knight added another and an infield out by Dave Concepcion produced the fourth run of the frame.

The Padres scored twice in the seventh inning to capture the second game. A triple by Jay Johnstone drove home the tying run and a pinch-single by Jerry Turner scored Johnstone with the deciding run. [The Sporting News]
