Lou Brock became the 14th player in baseball history and second Cardinal to get 3,000 hits when he cracked singles in two trips to the plate in a 3-2 victory over the Cubs. The veteran left fielder sliced a single to left in the first inning and rammed a line drive off Cub pitcher Dennis Lamp's hand in the fourth frame. Lamp sustained a bruised hand and was forced to leave the game.

The Redbirds won the contest in the ninth when a one-out single by Ken Reitz, a hit batsman and a pinch-single by Dane Iorg loaded the bases before Garry Templeton delivered a sacrifice fly to score Tom Herr, pinch-runner for Reitz, with the winning tally. [The Sporting News]
