A four-run outburst in the sixth inning carried the Tigers to a 5-3 decision over the Angels. Nolan Ryan, making his first start for the Angels after being out of action 19 days with arm problems, shut out the Tigers for five innings.

But in the sixth frame, consecutive singles by Jason Thompson, Champ Summers and Jerry Morales loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly by Lance Parrish plated one run and after Tom Brookens was hit by a pitch to reload the sacks, Ryan was removed in favor of Mark Clear.
