Getting his first two major league hits in the same inning, Greg Johnston helped the Giants to an 8-2 thumping of the Cubs. The Giants trailed, 2-1, when they sent 12 men to the plate in the fifth. Johnston, who entered game in the fourth after Bill North was ejected for arguing the call on an attempted steal, doubled to score John Curtis, who was aboard via a single. Rob Andrews and Jack Clark followed with doubles.

A triple by Mike Ivie plated Clark and brought on Dick Tidrow in relief of starter Mike Krukow. Cub right fielder Mike Vail dropped Larry Herndon's fly ball, allowing Ivie to score, and on the throw home, Herndon reached third.
