Racing to their sixth straight victory, the Pirates edged the Padres, 5-4. Gene Tenace hit a two-run homer for the Padres in the first inning, but the Pirates picked up an unearned run in their half and went ahead with three in the fourth.

After singles by Willie Stargell, Bill Madlock and Ed Ott produced one tally, Phil Garner walked to load the bases and Omar Moreno drove in two runs with a single.
