Rallying for five runs in the eighth inning, the Cubs defeated the Padres, 9-6. The Padres scored five of their runs on homers. Dave Winfield connected with two men on base in the third inning. Gene Tenace added a solo swat in the fourth. After Ozzie Smith tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, Jerry Turner hit the Padres' third homer of the game in the eighth.

The Cubs, who had a two-run homer by Steve Dillard, trailed, 6-4 before beginning their rally. Walks to Dave Kingman and Barry Foote around an infield single by Jerry Martin loaded the bases with one out. Dillard bounced out, scoring Kingman. Larry Biittner then batted for winning pitcher Dick Tidrow and singled, driving in two runs to send the Cubs ahead. Their extra pair followed on two errors and a single by Scot Thompson.
