Ken Oberkfell had three hits, drove in two runs and scored twice to pace the Cardinals to a 6-3 decision over the Padres. Oberkfell doubled to lead off the sixth inning and Keith Hernandez and Bernie Carbo followed with singles. A sacrifice fly by Tony Scott drove in Hernandez.

Mike Phillips led off the Redbird seventh with a double and reached third on a sacrifice bunt. Lou Brock walked and stole second and both Phillips and Brock scored on a single by Oberkfell, who eventually came home on a hit by Carbo. [The Sporting News]
