A seventh-inning homer by Gary Matthews snapped a 4-4 tie and enabled the Braves to edge the Phillies, 5-4. The Braves led, 4-1, until the Phillies tied the score in the sixth with a single by Mike Schmidt, double by Greg Luzinski, triple by Dave Rader and single by Manny Trillo. Larry Bradford, in relief of Rick Matula, pitched to only one batter and got credit for his first major league victory. Gene Garber recorded his 21st save. [The Sporting News]
