Aided by misplays, the Cardinals scored five runs in the first inning and went on to an 8-5 victory over the Padres. Garry Templeton singled to start the Cards' first and stole second before Lou Brock walked. A double by Keith Hernandez plated Templeton, and Brock and Hernandez both came home when Padre third baseman Kurt Bevacqua missed catcher Bill Fahey's pickoff attempt.
