Batting with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh inning, Mike Ivie cleared the sacks with a double to bring the Giants a 5-2 victory over the Cubs. Barry Foote and Ken Henderson homered for the Cubs' counters. Willie McCovey accounted for the Giants' first run with a circuit clout in the fourth and Jack Clark stole home to tie the score at 2-2 in the sixth.

Larry Herndon doubled with one out in the seventh and stopped at third on a single by Joe Strain, who took second on the throw home. Willie Hernandez, replacing Lynn McGlothen, passed Clark intentionally and struck out McCovey before yielding the mound to Dick Tidrow. Ivie worked the count to 3-2 and then lashed his double.
