Deciding the longest game in the major leagues this season, Bill Robinson doubled in the 19th inning and scored on a single by Tim Foli to give the Pirates a 4-3 victory over the Padres in a contest that lasted six hours, 12 minutes. The Padres left 26 men on base, the major league record for 19 innings and one shy of the all-time mark of 27 stranded by the Braves against the Phillies in a 20-inning game May 4. 1973.

The Padres held a 2-0 lead going into the ninth when the Pirates rallied to tie the score. Dave Parker doubled, John Milner walked and Bill Madlock singled for one run. Rollie Fingers relieved Gaylord Perry and, after a walk to Ed Ott, Milner scored on a passed ball by Bill Fahey to send the game into overtime. The Pirates took the lead in the 12th with a double by Phil Garner and single by Omar Moreno, but the Padres forced continuation of play with a matching tally on a single by Fahey, pass to Dave Winfield, force of Fahey by Fred Kendall and single by Dan Briggs.
