Four-hit pitching by Ed Whitson carried the Giants to a 3-2 triumph over the Cardinals. The winning run was driven home with a pinch-single by Willie McCovey. Roger Metzger singled in the seventh inning and was forced by Dennis Littlejohn. After a sacrifice by Whitson and pass to Bill North, McCovey batted for Joe Strain and rapped his single to break the 2-2 tie.
