For the second night in succession, Keith Hernandez supplied the Cardinals' winning hit, smashing a three-run homer in the seventh inning to beat the Padres, 5-3. Hernandez, who had three hits, also singled in the sixth and crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Randy Jones and single by Tony Scott to tie the score at 2-2.

With one out in the seventh, Silvio Martinez singled and Garry Templeton doubled. After Jerry Mumphrey grounded out, with the runners holding their bases, Hernandez smashed his homer. The Padres' last run came on a circuit clout by Bill Fahey in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
