The Yankees edged the Red Sox, 3-2, with the winning run coming home on an error by Ted Sizemore. The score was 1-1 in the eighth inning when Willie Randolph drilled a one-out double.

After Oscar Gamble walked, Reggie Jackson hit a grounder to shortstop Rick Burleson, who threw to second to force Gamble, but Sizemore's relay to first was wild and Randolph raced home with the decisive tally.
