After failing to hold a 5-1 lead, the Dodgers scored on a sacrifice fly by Gary Thomasson with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to beat the Reds, 6-5. The Dodgers built up their early advantage with the aid of a homer by Ron Cey. The Reds, who had a circuit clout by Dan Driessen in the second, added two runs in the sixth on a single by George Foster, pass to Johnny Bench and a pair of infield outs.

Foster drove in a run with a double in the seventh and Paul Blair tied the score with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. The Dodgers opened the ninth with singles by Steve Garvey and Cey. After one out, Steve Yeager beat out an infield hit, loading the bases and setting the stage for Thomasson's winning fly. [The Sporting News]
