Brilliant relief pitching by Woodie Fryman enabled the Expos to beat the Cardinals, 4-1. The veteran lefty came on with the bases loaded and none out in the seventh inning and retired Garry Templeton on a pop fly. Lou Brock then lined to left and Warren Cromartie threw out Ken Reitz trying to score from third base.

The Expos broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth when Gary Carter singled, went to third on a double by Ellis Valentine and came home on an error by Templeton. Two insurance runs followed in the sixth on a single by Dave Cash, pass to Andre Dawson, forceout by Rusty Staub and singles by Valentine and Larry Parrish. [The Sporting News]
