Sweeping a doubleheader from the Cubs, 8-6 and 3-2, the Expos moved into first place in the East division by less than one percentage point over the Pirates. The Expos broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run outburst in the fourth inning of the curtain raiser on an RBI single by Ellis Valentine, run-scoring triple by Larry Parrish and two-run single by Dave Cash. Parrish and Andre Dawson connected for homers for the Expos and Dave Kingman drove in three runs for the Cubs with his 45th homer, a triple and single.

The nightcap was tied, 2-2, in the fifth inning when the Expos scored their eventual winning tally on a double by Warren Cromartie and single by Cash. The Expos' first two runs came on a homer by Parrish in the second, the third baseman's 23rd circuit clout of the campaign. [The Sporting News]
