Allowing just three hits, Dennis Leonard pitched the Royals to a 4-0 whitewashing of the Twins. The shutout was Leonard's fourth of the season and the third in his last five starts.

With two out in the sixth inning of the scoreless game, George Brett hit a pop fly down the left field line that Rick Sofield dropped for an error and Brett reached second. Amos Otis followed with a single driving in Brett, and Al Cowens drilled a double that scored Otis. Other runs came in the eighth on a single by Hal McRae, triple by Brett and single by Otis.
