John Candelaria and Kent Tekulve combined on a shutout as the Pirates defeated the Cardinals, 2-0. The Pirates scored their first run in the second inning when Bill Madlock walked, stole second and came home on a single by Ed Ott.

Ott tripled in the fifth frame and was driven in on a single by Phil Garner. Tekulve relieved in the ninth with runners on second and third and one out and slammed the door on the Redbirds for his 27th save of the year. [The Sporting News]
