A bad-hop single by pinch-hitter Rusty Staub in the ninth inning, driving in two runs, enabled the Expos to edge the Cubs, 4-3, and maintain their precarious lead over the Pirates in the East division. The game-winning hit came off Bruce Sutter, who replaced Rick Reuschel following singles by Gary Carter and Ellis Valentine. Sutter walked Larry Parrish intentionally and retired Rodney Scott on a force play at the plate before Staub bounced his single over first baseman Larry Biittner's head. [The Sporting News]
