Pinch-hitting, Wayne Gross smashed a grand-slam homer to cap a six-run explosion in the eighth inning as the A's defeated the White Sox, 8-3. Claudell Washington homered in the sixth to give the White Sox a 3-2 lead before the A's erupted. Rickey Henderson walked to open the rally and, after a sacrifice by Dwayne Murphy, shortstop Greg Pryor threw wildly on a grounder by Jim Essian, putting runners on second and third.

The White Sox passed Dave Revering intentionally to load the bases, but Jeff Newman wrecked the move with a two-run single. Mitchell Page then walked to reload the sacks for Gross, who batted for Larry Murray and hit his grand slam off Ed Farmer. [The Sporting News]
