The Pirates broke a tie with a two-out single by Bill Robinson in the seventh inning and defeated the Mets, 5-4, before getting word late at night that they had moved into first place in the East division as a result of the Expos' loss in the second game of their twi-night doubleheader with the Cardinals.

Tim Foli had a big hand in the Pirates' victory, rapping three hits in three official trips, driving in two runs and scoring one. After Omar Moreno walked with one out in the seventh, Foli also drew a pass. Dave Parker forced Foli at second as Moreno moved to third.
