After losing the first game of a doubleheader to the Cardinals, 4-3, the Expos came back to win the second game, 5-1, on a grand-slam homer by Dave Cash in the 10th inning and returned to first place in the East division by one percentage point over the Pirates. In the lidlifter, a double by Garry Templeton and single by Keith Hernandez gave the Cards a first-inning run and they added two more in the second on a safe bunt by Tony Scott, double by Ken Oberkfell and singles by Ken Reitz and Templeton. Throwing errors by Tony Perez and Larry Parrish gave the Cardinals what proved to be the deciding marker in the third. Parrish hit a two-run homer for the Expos.

In the second contest, Gary Carter doubled in the 10th, Jerry White received an intentional walk and Warren Cromartie was safe on an error by second baseman Oberkfell to load the bases for Cash, who connected for the first grand slam of his major league career. [The Sporting News]
