An error by St. Louis third baseman Ken Reitz permitted the go-ahead run to score as the Phillies rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to down the Cardinals, 7-5. After the Cards had taken a 5-4 lead in the eighth with a four-run outburst capped by a three-run homer by Ted Simmons, the Phillies tied the score in the ninth on consecutive two-out singles by Pete Rose, Manny Trillo and Bake McBride.

Mike Schmidt hit a grounder to third that Reitz misplayed and Trillo scored. The Phillies picked up an insurance tally on an RBI single by Greg Gross. [The Sporting News]
