After Eddie Murray broke a tie with a homer in the seventh inning, Mark Belanger walked with two out in the eighth and scored on a double by Al Bumbry to enable the Orioles to defeat the Tigers, 8-7. The Tigers got off to a 3-0 lead in the first on a homer by Ron LeFlore, pass to Lou Whitaker and homer by Steve Kemp, but the Orioles erupted for five runs in the second, including consecutive circuit clouts by Lee May and Rich Dauer. The Orioles picked up another run in the fourth, only to have the Tigers tie the score at 6-6 in their half on a pass to Jerry Morales with the bases loaded, an infield out by Jason Thompson and single by Kirk Gibson.

Following Murray's homer and Bumbry's run-scoring double that put the Orioles up by two runs, the Tigers threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with two out against Tippy Martinez. Don Stanhouse relieved and walked pinch-hitter John Wockenfuss to force in a run but then retired Gibson to save the game. [The Sporting News]
