Brian Downing hit a three-run homer and Don Baylor also drove in three runs with a homer and single to pace the Angels to an 11-6 victory over the Royals. Baylor's homer started the scoring in the second inning. With the score tied, 2-2, the Angels exploded for six runs in the seventh. Baylor drove in two runs with a single and Downing capped the outburst with a homer.

The Royals cut their deficit with four runs in the eighth, three scoring on a homer by George Brett, but the Angels iced the victory with three in the ninth on a single by Rod Carew, homer by Bobby Grich, single by Larry Harlow for his fourth hit of the game and a double by Jim Anderson. Willie Wilson stole his 75th base of the season for the Royals, becoming only the fifth player in A. L. history to reach that figure in thefts. [The Sporting News]
