An unearned run in the seventh inning enabled the Cardinals to edge the Cubs, 2-1, with Silvio Martinez gaining his 15th victory. The Cubs' counter in the first also was unearned on an error by Ken Oberkfell. The Cards tied the score against Dennis Lamp in the fourth on a single by Lou Brock, a stolen base, single by Keith Hernandez and infield out by Ted Simmons.

In the seventh, Hernandez was safe on an error by Larry Biittner and stole second. After stopping at third on a single by Dane Iorg, Hernandez scored the deciding run on an infield out by Tony Scott. [The Sporting News]
