Coming from behind with five runs after two were out in the eighth inning, the Reds defeated the Padres, 8-5. Dave Concepcion started the Reds' rally with a double, George Foster walked and Johnny Bench drove in two runs with a double.

Randy Jones gave way to Steve Mura on the mound for the Padres and was greeted with a single by Ray Knight that tied the score at 5-5. Dan Driessen followed with a double for the go-ahead run and Hector Cruz added another tally with a single.
