The Expos swept a twi-night doubleheader from the Mets, 6-3 and 2-0, and moved into the lead in the East division by one-half game over the Pirates, who lost to the Phillies. In the opener, Ellis Valentine doubled in the second inning and scored the Expos' first run on a single by Rodney Scott. A double by Gary Carter and single by Valentine added a run in the fourth before the Mets rallied to tie the score in the seventh. Jerry White, replacing Valentine in the Expos' outfield, came to bat in the eighth and smashed a homer to break the tie. The Expos then iced the decision with three unearned runs. Carter doubled and Scott was safe on an error by Mets' shortstop Frank Taveras. After Scott stole second, Warren Cromartie was passed intentionally with one out to load the bases. Dave Cash followed with a long fly to right fielder Gil Flores, who held the ball, thinking his catch made it three out, and both Carter and Scott scored on the mental error.

Scott Sanderson for the Expos and Mike Scott for the Mets matched ciphers through the first eight innings of the nightcap before the Expos broke away to score their runs in the ninth. Andre Dawson singled with one out and took third on a single by Rusty Staub. Dawson scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Carter and Scott came across with an insurance run on a single by White.
