Bob Welch, who had been bothered by elbow trouble, made only his third appearance in over two months and gained his first victory since May 15 when the Dodgers defeated the Giants, 3-0. Welch worked the first five innings and allowed four singles. Joe Beckwith finished and yielded three more hits.

The Dodgers nailed Bob Knepper for two runs in the third on doubles by Davey Lopes and Pedro Guerrero, an infield hit by Steve Garvey and sacrifice fly by Ron Cey. Mickey Hatcher doubled and Steve Yeager singled for the other run in the sixth. [The Sporting News]
