A bases-loaded single by Bruce Bochy with two out in the 13th inning scored Craig Reynolds and gave the Astros a 3-2 victory to pull within 1½ games of the Reds in the West division race. The game started with aces J.R. Richard and Tom Seaver on the mound, but Seaver left after nine innings and Richard after 11.

In the 13th, with Tom Hume pitching for the Reds, Reynolds singled for his fourth hit of the game and Cesar Cedeno sacrificed. Following an intentional pass to Jose Cruz, Enos Cabell grounded out. The Reds then passed pinch-hitter Danny Heep to get at Bochy, who laced Hume's first pitch to him for the game-winning single.

The Reds' two runs came on a single by Dan Driessen and homer by Ray Knight in the second inning. The Astros scored an unearned run in the third and tied the game in the seventh when Rafael Landestoy singled, Richard sacrificed and Terry Puhl singled. [The Sporting News]
