George Hendrick hit a two-run homer in the second game as the Cardinals beat the Mets in a twi-night doubleheader, 6-3 and 3-2. Keith Hernandez, who leads the league in batting, had four hits for the Cardinals in the opener, including a homer. Lou Brock stole the 937th base of his career in the fourth inning, tying him with Billy Hamilton for the all-time major league record. Hamilton set his mark between 1888 and 1901. Richie Hebner accounted for all of the Mets' runs in the first game with two homers.

In the nightcap, Hendrick hit his two-run homer in the fourth inning. The Cardinals added what proved to be the deciding marker in the seventh after loading the bases on a single by Jerry Mumphrey, double by Ken Oberkfell and a pass to Garry Templeton. With one out, Jim Lentine forced Templeton at second but beat the throw to first base, preventing a double play. [The Sporting News]
