Willie Stargell drove in three runs with two homers and Ed Ott also batted in three runs as the Pirates defeated the Expos, 10-4, to regain first place by a half-game in the East division. Stargell started the scoring with a homer following a single by Tim Foli in the first inning. After the Expos picked up a run on a sacrifice fly by Tony Perez in the third, Larry Parrish tied the score with a homer in the fourth, but Stargell put the Pirates ahead again with his second round-tripper of the game in their half of the inning.

The Expos came back to knot count on a run-scoring single by Ellis Valentine in the fifth. The Pirates struck back for three runs in their half. Stargell walked, John Milner singled and Bill Madlock walked to load the bases. Ott singled, driving in two runs to kayo Scott Sanderson.
