A three-run homer by Tim McCarver highlighted a seven-run third inning that carried the Phillies to an 11-5 verdict over the Cardinals. The seven-run inning began with an infield hit by Steve Carlton. After Card shortstop Garry Templeton booted Pete Rose's grounder, a double by Larry Bowa scored Carlton, but Rose was thrown out at the plate. Greg Gross followed with an RBI double and after Mike Schmidt walked, McCarver connected for his first round-tripper of the season.

A double by John Poff, error by center fielder Tony Scott and singles by Lonnie Smith and Bud Harrelson produced another pair of runs. Rose went hitless in five trips and was stopped on his 23-game batting streak. [The Sporting News]
